BROWNIE THE SLOTH CROCHET AMIGURUMI

This sloth pattern was inspired by my son’s FAVORITE stuffed animal. Brownie. He always has him on his side and I wanted to make him a baby/small version he could take in his backpack to school.

Henry was my second pair of eyes in creating this crochet “baby brownie” as we call him and we really love him so much!

The Sloth was intentionally created to be small but can be made bigger by adjusting the yarn weight, hook, and going up on safety eyes. Having this kit I got from amazon made creating the face for this sloth that much easier and faster! It is totally optional but I really liked the nose and eyes it came with! You can find the exact one I got HERE.

This amigurumi is worked in the round and a scrappy piece of yarn does the trick! I hope you enjoy him as much as we do!

Happy Crocheting!

Materials:

3.50mm crochet hook

Cotton yarn (weight #4) – I used I love this cotton by Hobby Lobby in 20 Brown and Taupe for the face and claws and black yarn.

Black yarn for the mouth (optional- you can use this black yarn for eyes and nose if you don’t have safety eyes or prefer it this way best)

Poly-fil

Yarn needle

Scissors

Stitch marker (I used a contrasting piece of yarn)

Safety Eyes and nose – I used 11mm from this set I purchased from Amazon.com

Abbreviations:

MC – Magic circle aka magic ring

ST – stitch aka space

SL ST – Slip stitch

CH – chain

SC – single crochet

HDC – half double crochet

DC – double crochet

SCDEC – single crochet decrease

InvDec. – Invisible single crochet decrease. insert the hook through the front loop of the next two stitches, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through the two-loop on the hook.

SCINC – single crochet increase – two single crochet stitches in the same stitch.

Notes:

You will be working in the round so keep a stitch marker close to keep track of each round.

As for the eyes and nose, the safety material I used is optional. Other methods of applications include; crocheting small circles shapes to sew on or simply sew on using a black yarn wrapping it about 3 times to make an oval-like eye and do this sideways for the nose once the face has been sewed on.

When using safety eyes make sure you secure it correctly according to the instructions.

My tension is naturally tight when making amigurumi, keep that in mind for the end result. You want to make sure the holes of the stitches are not too loose or else the poly-fil will show through easier.

The yarn you choose to use will increase or decrease the size of the amigurumi.

This sloth measures from the head to the elongated bottom leg approximately 9 inches tall. 5.5 inches approximately when sitting.

Assembly

  1. Start by Sewing on the round face you made with the taupe-colored yarn and sew it on securely on the head. Center it one row above the last on the head.
  2. insert the safety nose one stitch below the center of the face and push through and secure inside with the washer.
  3. Using the eye patches. Attach the safety eyes to them with the washer securely in place near the edge of the first row. Then sew it on half on the face and slightly slanted downward inserting the lend of the safety eye through the head. Repeat with the other side.
  4. With black yarn sew on a smiley face. I sewed through 5 stitches one row below the nose. (optional)
  5. Sew on the head onto the body. The hole of the head will be wider than the body. Insert the neck portion of the body inside the head covering approx. 2 rows and sew around.
  6. Sew on the arms on the sides slightly shifted forward. Legs 3 rows away from the MC. sew the four claws onto the legs with the right side face down. Sew just above the MC going in and out of it as you sew across the claw.
