I have been having a great time making my daughter’s new hair bows. She loves to accessories her hair when she feels like getting her hair done and I am all for it! Love being a girl mom! We add a sparkling gem because we also love shiny and sparkly things! So with that said, we are accumulating many bows and needed somewhere to keep them away from the puppy but still accessible. This is the first time we are owning a bow holder, so I was very excited to make her this one!
She is a pink and purple lover so I used a lot of those colors. But this is the fun part because you can make it your own set of colors you choose!

Materials:
Here is a list of the materials I had at home and used to make this.
- A wooden plaque I purchased that is 6” by 14” – I found this one similar on Amazon. I purchased mine at A.C. Moore which is no longer open. But any craft store should carry something of this length.
- Acrylic Paint for decoration and paintbrushes. If you have a Cricut or Silhouette Machine, the name and decorating would work too! I don’t have one so I opted to attempt the name by hand.
For the white part of the outline in her name, I use a White Chalk paint marker. I had to go over it twice to make it vibrant. (optional)
- Stapler – The kind you can open up to punch staples in the back to hold the yarn in place. ( I found this easy and for bows, I think it should hold pretty well)
- Yarn – I liked using the color made easy by the lion brand (The Pink and Purple color), it’s a bulky size yarn so it makes for a fuller look with fewer strands. The sparkly pink and rainbow yarn is a worsted 4 weight yarn so I held two strands together to act like bulky yarn. I made 60 strands, 30 inches long, divided into ten. More details on this below.
- Scissors – to evenly trim the bottom of the bow holder.
- Stickers – Optional, for decorating.
- Small Sawtooth Hangers to hang the plaque
Disclaimer:
Make sure to not pull the strands too hard or strands may fall out. Keep high and away from little ones who may pull it down. This is for decorative purposes and not a child’s toy. I felt the need to put out this disclaimer just so my intentions of sharing this DIY are clear and to keep everyone safe.
Step One
First I painted the entire wooden plaque with the main base color I wanted to stand out in her pink room. It is this pretty blue in the color Hawaii from Anita’s Craft Paint Acrylics.
Then while it was still wet, I used the back of a smaller brush to write her name so I had something to use as a guide when I put paint on. This way if I made a mistake it was easy to brush away. Again, if you have a cool Cricut machine or similar, this would be the place to use it!
Step Two
I waited for the base color to dry and then added some artsy drawings. When that was all done, glitter and everything was dry to the touch, I added some stickers I had because she LOVES unicorns.
So this was a hit as soon as I added them lol.
Step Three
Yarn
I liked using bulky-sized yarn, any would work, I had Color Made Easy from Lion Brand already on hand and used that.
For the yarn, I cut 6 strands, 30 inches long, folded each together, and make a knot in the middle. The knot is to help keep the yarn from slipping through the staples that we add later after all 10 sets of yarn are done.
If you are using worsted 4 weight yarn, hold two strands together to act as bulky-sized yarn, so there will be technically 12 strands grouped together for those.
Feel free to add more but be careful not to overcrowd or make it too thick because the plaque may not lay nicely when hanged.
Step Four
Open your stapler and make sure to staple hard enough for it to really hold making sure staples are not loose.
Place the knot about half an inch from the bottom and staple twice for each side of that one set of strands. This will ensure to keep the knot and yarn in place.
I added a small braid, 3 strands each on the right side.
Step Five
Attach the form of the hanging method you’d like. I used these small Sawtooth hangers for ours.
Final Step
Hang and add your bows!
Hope you enjoyed this DIY Bow Holder made with Yarn as much as I did making it!
Always nice to be able to use my yarn stash for something fun like this!
