Hi, my fellow crochet friends! If you are here you are in for a treat! These super cute crochet fishes are so easy and after the first one, you will be hooked!! They require the most basic of crochet stitches and so it is quite a good pattern for a beginner! Just have your single crochet decrease and increase techniques ready and you are all set!

Wait? That’s not right let’s get into the materials you will need as well!

Alright now here’s what you came for! The cute crochet fish pattern!


  • Premier Cotton Medium 4 weight yarn – Any cotton or acrylic will work as well
  • H 8 / 5.00 mm hook
  • Scissors
  • yarn needle



– In Row 12 {1. & 2.} are in the same row. Photo tutorial included.


– Final measurements are approximately 3 inches in length with medium weight yarn, but differs with yarn and tension. These will be cute fishes no matter the size. But if you want smaller fish use smaller yarn and hook if bigger fishes you need to use larger sized yarn and hook.

Abbreviations/ Definitions

Ch – chain

SC – single crochet

Sl St – slip stitch

FO – fasten off

Sts – stitches

Sc Dec – single crochet two stitches together.

Sc Inc – make two single crochet stitches in the same stitch.

Ch 3

Row 1 – Sc Inc in the next two stitches. Chain 1, turn. (4)

Row 2 -SC across. Chain 1, turn. (4)

Row 3 – Sc Inc, SC in the next 2 sts, Sc Inc. Chain 1, turn. (6)

Row 4 -SC across. Chain 1, turn. (6)

Row 5 – SC across. Chain 1, turn. (6)

Row 6 – SC across. Chain 1, turn. (6)

Row 7 – Sc Dec, SC in the next 2 sts, Sc Dec. Chain 1, turn. (4)

Row 8 – SC, Sc Dec, SC. Chain 1, turn. (3)

Row 9 – Sc Dec, SC. Chain 1, turn. (2)

Row 10 – SC across. Chain 1, turn. (2)

Row 11 – SC across. Chain 4. (2)

Row 12 – 1. SC in the 2nd chain from the hook and in the next 2, sl st in the same stitch where you chained.

2. SC in the next stitch and chain 4, SC in the 2nd chain from the hook and in the next 2 chains, sl st in the same stitch as the SC, Chain 1.

Step-by-step crochet technique for creating fish applique from yarn

Row 13 – SC around the fish and sl st to the first SC made and FO. Leave a long piece if you plan on sewing the applique or weave in the ends.

    This is cute and exactly what I needed. However, you need to correct row 1. You have left off the “c” of your first Inc. I didn’t have a problem with it but a newbie might. Thanks.
