My son has been loving hippos lately and he asked me to make him a hippo! You know as a mama maker I obviously had to drop everything and make him a snuggly Hippo! He chose the color green for the shirt because it is his favorite color. The tiny arms are one of my favorite parts of him! So adorable! I hope you all enjoy it!

- 3.75mm crochet hook

- Yarn needle
- Stitch markers (highly recommend this extra piece of yarn works great) X2
- Poly-fil – I use the one for doll making
- (Optional) Pins to help with ears, arms, and mouth placements.
- (Optional) Blush or paint for the cheeks. Add a little at a time. Inside the ears and cheeks for the blush
CH – chain
ST – stitch (stitch space)
Sl St – slip stitch
SC – single crochet
FLO – front loop only
BLO – back loop only
SC INC – single crochet increase
(2 sc in the same st)
INV DEC – invisible SC decrease ( decrease using FLO)
F.O: fasten off
MC – magic circle / magic ring
Read Before beginning:
- STITCH MARKER – You will be working in rounds so keep a stitch marker close to use when working up the doll. Unless otherwise stated to CH and turn. They will mark the 1st st of each round.
- TENSION – Make sure you use a tight enough tension to help close any “holes” a loose tension may cause. I crochet yarning under then Over to create a tighter stitch. Go down a hook size if needed. ( my tension is naturally tight)
- ASSEMBLY – The amigurumi is worked up by first making two legs, joining them together, and working up the body and the head in one piece. Arms, ears, and mouth are separate.
- BLUSH (OPTIONAL)- This is optional but you could also use blush to add some sweetness to the cheeks. I use cosmetic grade blush using a dense small brush and little at a time.
- Pattern- (EX. *SC in 8, INV DEC in the next. Repeat from * to the end. (36) ) You will end that round with the second step of what that round instructs. This will vary.
Process pictures are available at the end of the pattern.

Fasten Off leaving a tail long enough to sew closed the top of the head.
Step 71 – Weave through the front loops of all 4 sts, pull to close the center, secure with a knot, and weave in the end. Insert your needle through the center of the hole you just closed and pull gently taking it out a few rounds below, cut the tail and use a hook to hide the tail inside the head.
Ears – Make 2 – with the main color
Rows 1 -5 – SC across (4) Chaining 1 and turning after each row.
at the end of Row 5, CH 1 and do not turn.
SC evenly as possible around the ear. Sl st to the first SC made.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew on the hippos head.
lay your piece down with the tail on the left side. Fold from left to right, insert the needle right across to cinch the lower part of the ear, secure with a knot, and sew on the head.
Sew 5 rows away from the center. Aligned with the sides/arms.
Arms – Make 2 – With main color and shirt color + Poly-fil
[Stop stuffing at round 5]
Start with the main color of the hippo.

SlSt to the next st and fasten off, leave a long tail long enough to sew on the side of the body.
Mouth/Nose – Using the main color + Poly-fil
You will be working on the other side of the chains in the first round to shape the front of the mouth/nose. Then Rounds will continue around with no joining. Stitch marker needed.
Round 1 – SC in 7, 3SC in the next chain, SC in the next 6 chains on the other side of the chains,
2SC in the last chain space. (18)
Round 2 – SC INC in the first st space, SC in 6, SC INC in the next 3 stitches, SC in 6, SC INC in the last 2 stitches. (24)
Round 3 – SC INC in the next 2 stitches, SC in 7, SC INC in the next 4 stitches, SC in 9, SC INC in the last 2 stitches. (32)
Rounds 4 – 7 – SC in every st (32)
Sl st to the next st and fasten off leaving a long tail to sew on. Adding Poly-fil as you get halfway to the sewing closed. Make sure to add enough poly-fil and shape like down below before sewing on. I kept my thumb on the center of the piece as I was sewing to keep it steady.
Use the main color to sew on the “nostrils” on the two points of the mouth. 6 stitches apart. Going over 5X to create a bump. Secure with a knot and weave in the ends. 2x
Eyes- Using dark green yarn, go over two rows about 3 times tugging gently after each one. Securing with a knot and weaving the ends inside. Eyes should be 4 stitches apart. Right above the mouth/nose.
Tail- Using the main color cut 3 – 8 inch strands. With the crochet hook yarn over and pull through half the strands. Placed between the 3rd and 4th round below the 1st round of the “shirt”.
Make a braid approx. 1 inch long. Grouping 2 strands together for the braid.
Use a strand to wrap around the bottom and secure with a knot 2x. Trim the excess of the tail for a straight edge.
